Experience Kayaking Series – Colorado
Flat and Moving Water
Adaptive Adventures is expanding its services to include kayaking in the Colorado area. This summer we will focus on providing participants with an introduction to the sport of kayaking on “flat” and “moving” water. Locations will be various reservoirs and some calm rivers (no rapids) in and around the Denver Metro area and the foothills.
Through the use of fully adaptive kayaks, recreational kayaks, and adaptive paddles when needed, we can provide workshops for a wide variety of physical disabilities. Our workshops will provide instruction, supervision, kayaks, paddles and personal floatation devices (PFD’s). Workshops will teach participants about the boats, various paddling techniques, and important safety information. Kayaking is an excellent adaptive sport that many times doesn’t require additional expensive equipment. Join us for one or several workshops to learn more about this great sport.
South Platte River Specifics:
This is an excellent day to increase your kayaking skills by adding both moving water and class 1 and 2 rapids. Participants should have experience in a kayak before this day, if not please come to the Bear Creek Lake workshop the evening before, and be comfortable with being in the water. This section of the South Platte from C-470 to Union Chutes is relatively shallow with a number of man made "drops". These are short sections that have some possibility of tipping over but easy to collect ourselves before returning to the river.
We will meet in the parking area near the South Platte and C-470. Please see the map for details and call for directions. This trip will require a vehicle shuttle and the ability to have 2 chairs greatly improves this process.
What to Bring:
- Swimsuit or clothing that can get wet
- Towel
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat (for sun protection)
- Snacks or lunch depending on the time of day
Costs:
Workshops are free for participants, although some reservoirs may have an entrance fee.
