The Jr. Wheelchair Sports Camp is a week long day camp for children with disabilities who use a wheelchair. The camp is a great opportunity for children to learn about and experience wheelchair sports. It offers many sports including basketball, tennis, soccer, cycling, swimming, hockey, bowling, and rugby.
The camp also offers archery, fencing, dancing, and Tae Chi. During the camp, the kids learn about the different sports equipment like the hand-cycle, basketball chair, rugby chair, and more. In addition to trying out the different wheelchair sports, the kids also have a great opportunity to socialize, make new friends, develop skills, and gain self confidence. The camp offers a variety of sports and skill levels allowing everyone to participate in a fun way that is comfortable for them.
This was my first experience working with hand-cycling. There were two young boys that I really enjoyed working with. The first boy was an independent rider. All we had to do was put him in the hand-cycle and he was off. He went around the track probably close to four or five times each day and probably would have kept going if his group members hadn’t told him that he had to stop and move on to another activity. The second boy was not independent. He couldn’t pedal, but he could ride. I walked along side him along with another volunteer. Although he couldn’t pedal, I could tell he was having fun. He never stopped smiling — and neither did I.
