While land-locked Colorado may not seem like a sailor’s dream location, there are actually many great lakes in Colorado that are perfect for sailboats. Not surprisingly, Colorado boasts the highest yacht club in the United States, at 9,017ft on Dillon Reservoir. I would also venture to say that few places are more picturesque with snow-capped fourteeners visible in all directions. Since sailboats aren’t particularly speedy, thousands of miles of ocean are of little value to day sailors. So, let’s sail Colorado.
We principally operate out of three Denver area lakes with bi-weekly adaptive programs throughout the summer (May to September) at Chatfield Reservoir, Cherry Creek Reservoir, and Soda Lake (Bear Creek State Park). We also support therapeutic recreation programs in Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins with one or two events per year and we participate in the well know Craig Hospital Hobie Day, the largest event of its kind in the US. Finally, in 2016, we’ll participate in the three-day No Barriers Summit at Dillion Reservoir.
As we grow our adaptive sailor base, we are aggressively stepping into dinghy racing once a week at Chatfield and we hope to establish events in Mission Bay, San Diego (Hobie Cats) and Galveston Bay, Texas (Sonar 23s).
Our fleet consists of six 17’ WindRider trimarans and a safety pontoon boat. We also are integrated with two area yacht clubs with sailors offering their own boats to support Adaptive Adventures. Our sailboats have adaptive features to accommodate a range of capabilities and we are installing a dock-mounted hoist to facilitate transfers. Whatever your interest, from solo racing to just enjoying the serenity of a wind-powered vessel, we have a program to fit your needs.
